Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

Session 001
Trouble on the road

The campaign started with the party on the road between Nondrinn and Calgen, having just crossed the ferry. Coming to a sharp turn in the road, they found their path blocked by a fallen tree.

Forced to stop and having difficulties in maneuvering a line of harnessed horses and carts, the party had a warning arrow fired from the trees, and orders to drop any loot.

Not giving in without a fight, the party draws their melee weapons and gives fight to the bandits in trees. They quickly dispatch the small band of goblins behind this.

Camping that night, the party notices smoke in the distance. While discussing whether to investigate or not, Mordai (the camp cook) informs the party while they were fighting at the front of the caravan, the back van had been ransacked and all their cash was gone.

Traqinor and Mungo snuck up to investigate, and spotted goblins in a tree by a chasm, with a gong at the foot of the tree. Sneaking back to report, the party decided their strength was in daylight. The party dispatched the goblins in the tree, but not before they sounded a gong. The party found an entrance underground, and methodically emptied the caverns of the goblin inhabitants, even dispatching the gnoll who appeared to be leading the goblins in a room with various tools and clear fresh digging.

Campaign backstory

None of this travelling band seemed to fit in to a city living. Whether through choice or circumstance, everyone who came across the circus and joined felt more comfortable on the road than staying crowded in with other people.

Khell found a way to make them part of his group. Somehow they all … fit. Life wasn’t luxurious, but there was food, shelter, honest (or not so) work and company.

Then about six months ago, while on the road Khell caught a fever, and over the next few weeks despite anything anyone could do, got worse and one night passed away. Since then, the circus just hasn’t seemed to work as it did. Funds have steadily dwindled. Crowds seem smaller, and less generous. And things cost money that no-one ever thought about.

The campaign is set with a small band of six (four players, two NPC’s) travelling a year long circuit through Sunndi. While they have the basics for their survival (caravans, horses, outfits and props, banners) money is skint.
